INSIGHT BREAK
"To do great important tasks, two things are necessary: a plan
and not quite enough time."

1. NEWS YOU CAN USE
===================================================
GIVE MORE-LIVE LONGER
"Give and thou shall receive" needs to be changed to "Give
and thou shall live longer." According to a new longitudinal study
of 423 seniors to be published in "Psychological Science"
shows that people who are helpful to others reduce their risk of dying
by nearly 60% compared to those who do not readily help or provide emotional
support to relatives and friends. The lead author, University of Michigan
psychologist Stephanie Brown reported that "people who reported
providing no help to others were more than twice as likely to die as
people who give some help to others."
ACTION STEPS:
Be selfish: give more of yourself without any concern for getting anything
in return.

HAVE SEX-STAY HEALTHY
(Okay, now I know how to get your attention.) According to Dr. Carl
Charnetski, author of "Feeling Good Is Good for You", making
love lowers stress, burns calories and keeps you healthy. He reports
that people who have sex once or twice a week had 30% higher levels
of immunoglobulin A-a substance found in the body that battles colds,
infections and even stomach bugs. (I guess that means that the people
who are getting sick on cruises are not making enough love?)
ACTION STEP
Instead of asking your spouse for sex, remind him/her that you require
therapy at least once a week to stay healthy. (It works for me.)

2. FIVE STEPS TO MAKE 2003 YOUR MOST SUCCESSFUL YEAR EVER
by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP
===================================================
Step 1: Write down your goals.
Yawn
not that goal stuff again! Is that what you said? If it you
did, please do yourself a favor and read the "Feedback From Readers"
section of this eNewsletter, and you'll be convinced that "magic"
happens once you commit your goals to paper. Here is how to get started.
Write down your three "fire-in-the-belly" lifetime goals.
Prioritize them, and put them on two 3x5 cards or Post-it notes. Put
one on your desk or Day Timer, and the other on your bathroom mirror.
Then get busy visualizing and internalizing these goals. (If they are
running inside your head like a perpetual movie loop, you've got it).
Follow that up with a detailed step-by-step action plan that will get
you to where you want to go. Then work that plan. (Need more help? Take
advantage of the Special Offer in the next section. My new CDs have
detailed steps to help you translate your dreams into reality in 2003.)
Step 2: Value yourself.
Who is your most important customer? If you said ME, you got the right
answer. Ask anyone in sales what it takes to be a sales superstar, and
they will tell you that you've got to love what you sell. Notice I said
love, not like! Even though you may not be in sales, you sell yourself
all the time! You sell your ideas, your proposals, your beliefs etc.
to your boss, your spouse, your children and even your pet. And to do
that successfully you've got to value, like and even love yourself the
way you are, not the way you ought to be. That means you turn off that
internal negative voice that keeps focusing on all your weaknesses.
Instead value yourself for your strengths and get rid of your weaknesses.
Step 3. Do what you don't feel like doing.
Chances are that those are the things that others don't feel like doing
either! To guide my actions I've developed an axiom: "If I don't
feel like doing something, I go do it. If I really feel like doing something,
I think about it twice before doing it." For example, I'm sitting
in front of my computer and writing this eNewsletter on an incredibly
beautiful winter day. The sparkling sunshine and snow are beckoning
me to go out and go cross-country skiing with my Superwoman-that's my
sweetheart of over 35 years. Yet, I discipline myself to do what I really
don't want to do. Here is a bonus strategy-do this one thing and I can
guarantee you that 2003 will be your best year ever: "Figure out
what your boss does not like to do, and do more of it!"
Step 4. Get paid less.
Yes, you read right! I said LESS! Why? Because if you get paid more
than you are worth you will be out of a job real soon! It's elementary,
Watson! In our capitalistic society you must generate more worth or
value than you receive, otherwise the system will go kaput. Besides,
"golden handcuffs" make you a slave. What you want to do is
give your employer more than he or she expects. Start right now. In
the long run, you will be compensated according to the value you deliver.
Here is how to stay on track. Compute your weekly pay, add about a third
for benefits, and divide by five. Put the value you just computed on
a 3x5 card or a Post-it note, and place it on your desk where it is
clearly visible. At the end of each day, ask yourself: "Did I generate
$x of value today?" If not, make changes until you can answer that
question in the affirmative at least 80% of the time.
Step 5. Invest in yourself.
If you want to earn more you've got to learn more. If you have a high-school
diploma you'll earn an average of $750,000 in your lifetime. With a
bachelors degree, approximately $1.5 million, and with a professional
degree like an MD, JD or PhD about $3 million. But don't stop there!
Figure out how much of your disposable income you spent on your own
development during the past year. If it is less than 3%, you're probably
becoming obsolete. Read at least half an hour every day. Reading at
least one non-fiction book every year puts you ahead of 45% of the U.S.
population. The top 3% of the population devours 16 books a year. If
you find it difficult to make time to read, listen to motivational and
educational programs in your car. (See the special offer in the next
paragraph.) By listening only half the time you'll earn the equivalence
of two, 3-credit college courses every year. Get a mentor and attend
seminars. Learning from other peoples' experiences (OPE) is a shortcut
to success.

3. FEEDBACK FROM READERS

Wolf-
I would absolutely love it if you used my "Persuasive Speech Outline"
[in your eNewsletter]. Please feel free to include my first and last
name.

Persuasive Speech Outline
Five years ago, I was suddenly faced with the unexpected burden of
caring for my mother after a debilitating illness. I recognized that
I was Ill equipped to assume the responsibilities placed before me.
My income barely provided for my well-being and at the time, the prospect
of earning more seemed impossible. Despair and hopelessness consumed
me and I fell into a deep depression. I needed to make a drastic change
to accomplish the immediate goal of caring for my mother.
One day, while seeking solace in the local used bookstore, I came across
a book that would make a dramatic impression on my way of thinking and
living, The 6 Success Strategies for Winning at Life, Love & Business
by Wolf J. Rinke, Ph.D. Like magic beans, the book opened a gateway
into unimaginable success and security. It gave me the essential skills
that I needed to achieve my dreams and secure my future. Unbelievably
simple, the book taught me how to first identify, then prioritize and
finally, accomplish my goals.
According to my class survey, 100% of the class has goals, but only
33% of you write them down. As stated by Dr. Rinke, one of the most
essential skills to master is how to effectively write out your goals
to help strengthen and build your resolve to pursue and complete every
objective that you set forth.
My intention today is to persuade you that having clearly defined, written
goals is an effective means of achieving success. Like making a cake
without a recipe, your cake will fall short of your dreams without the
necessary ingredients to help it rise. However, written goals will take
you step by step through your objectives until the dessert is complete
and you are ready to taste your sweet, fulfilling reward; and, the only
ingredients you will need are pen and paper.
It does not stop there, in order to be effective you must review your
goals continuously and realize that you control your future successes
by the steps you take today.
Writing down your goals is an important aspect of achieving success.
Five years ago, my goals included getting my drivers license, buying
my first car, going back to school and making a salary that would allow
me to care for my mother. I have achieved all those goals and now my
future goals include, graduating with high honors, making $40,000 a
year within two years, and buying my first home. Currently, my house
is being built and I will close on it during the spring.
When I first read Dr. Rinke's book, I did not believe that such a simple
thing could actually work. However, I started looking back on lists
I had made of things I wanted and I was astonished to find that I had
acquired over 90 percent of all the items on my lists. The proof was
there, all I had to do was apply this simple technique to my dreams.
Now, my life is so much better.
I sincerely hope that my success has at least persuaded you to try this
technique and see what the future holds in store for you. I believe
Gene Donohue said it best, "The difference between a goal and a
dream is the written word."
Thank you, Dawn Stephens; I could not have said it better!
