CHASE YOUR PASSION NOT YOUR PAY

Can't make a living doing what you love to do? Don't know how to transform your hobby into cash? Let me introduce you to Mike Wolf. Mike loves model trains. Influenced by his grandfather who worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. Mike started working for a neighbor who made toy trains as a youngster. Back then he made all of $1.50 per hour. By age 12 he was already selling his first model trains from the basement of his parents house in Laurel, MD. Today Mike is 40 years of age and his company M.T.H. Electric Trains employs more than 100 people and generates about $60 million in revenue per year. According to Maryland's Howard County officials, M.T.H. is "one of the fastest-growing light manufacturing firms in Howard County."

ACTION STEP: SEE "GETTING FIRED IS THE BEST THING..."

REMEMBER YOURSELF TO HEALTH

Dr. Herbert Benson, founder of the Mind Body Medical Institute at the Beth Israel Deaconist Medical Center in Boston, and author of "Timeless Healing" stated in a Good Morning America interview that "...60 to 90 percent of visits to health care professionals are in the stress-related mind-body realm where surgery doesn't work, where medications don't work."

ACTION STEPS: To take advantage of what Dr. Benson refers to as "remembered wellness [others call this the placebo effect] ... the ability to remember a healthy part about ourselves and take those mind-brain thoughts and create them into reality" requires both the caregiver and the patient to "believe in the capability of [the] healing capacity that resides within the mind." In short, think health ... not sickness, so that your mind can activate your immune system and keep you healthy.

2. GETTING FIRED IS THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU

by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP

========================================================

Statistics tell us that only 19% of the US population love what they do. Twenty five percent hate it! And the rest could take it or leave it! Unfortunately the people who either hate or are neutral about their jobs will find it difficult to succeed, regardless how hard they try or how long they work at it! And for them, getting fired may be just what the doctor ordered, because it will give them the impetus to find something that they love to do!

WHAT IF YOU HAVE A JOB?

How do you know whether you should stay in your current job or switch careers? Find out by answering the following seven questions:

1. When your opportunity clock rings in the morning, are you anxious to get up and go to work?

2. Are you excited to be in your current profession?

3. Do you love what you do? (Note I said love not like — there is a big difference!)

4. Do you feel privileged to be part of your current company or organization?

5. Does work seem like play to you?

6. Are you wondering why you are being paid for what you do?

7. Are you looking forward to work, at least four out of five days each week (80% of the time)?

If you answered YES to all seven questions you are in your dream career and are on your way to the top. If not read on, so you too can find out how to "work" less and enjoy more.

AVOID SEEKING PERFECTION

But first, regarding question number seven. Why not a 100% of the time? Because there is no perfect job; every job has some aspects that you will not care for. For example, I am a professional speaker, and love what I do. At times I have so much fun speaking that I wonder why I am being paid so well for it. It almost seems that I should be paying the audience. (Pretend you did not read that, especially if you are a meeting planner!) But there is a down side to professional speaking. It is traveling, especially airline travel, (I call it cattle herding), and being away from my wife and my own bed. So, for me, traveling is the other 20 percent. That's the price I happily pay to do the things I really love to do. (ThatÕs why Superwoman, thatÕs my wife of 32 years and business partner, tells prospective clients: "Wolf speaks for free, but he charges for travel.")

FIND YOUR PASSION

Here is another way that you can find out if you are passionate about what you do. Imagine that you have just won the BIG ONE. Six million dollars in the Lottery. What the heck. WeÕre dreaming here, so lets make it 30 million! Assume you take the next 12 months to "get everything you have always wanted to do out of your system." You buy yourself that dream house, purchase the Rolls Royce, go on several "once in a life" vacations, set aside enough money for you, every family member, relative and anyone else who has ever been nice to you. Having put that behind you, ask yourself: What will I do with the rest of my life? And what ever pops in your head at the very moment you ask that question, is what you should start pursuing right NOW!

DONÕT HAVE THE SKILLS NOR THE EDUCATION?

Get yourself a temporary job to help pay the bills. Make time to get the skills and the education you need. Watch less TV, go to fewer ball games so you can go to school in the evening and study on weekends. Do what ever it takes to prepare yourself for your dream job. After you have prepared yourself, work part time in your dream job. CanÕt get paid for it? Volunteer. Do what ever it takes, pay any price, make any sacrifice, just do it! Once you are certain that you have found your dream career, give up that temporary job. Not getting paid as much as in your former job? Not to worry. Just stay with your dream job. IÕve finally learned after more than 40 years of working that overnight success takes a long time. But IÕve also learned that once you find what you LOVE to do you will make more money, much more money than you have ever thought possible. Want proof? Look at the people you admire. People who have made it to the top in their chosen profession. I bet you that virtually all of them, love what they do. And by the way it does not matter what profession they are in because there is no such as thing as a "glamour" profession. A friend of ours lives in a $1.5 million mansion and has more money then heÕll ever be able to use in his life-time. His profession? He is a plumber! Yes, he owns a plumbing contracting company, but most importantly he is passionate about what he does. On the other hand I can introduce you to many a lawyer, physician or others who are in so called "glamour professions" who do not care for what they do, and who have trouble paying the mortgage.

In short, getting fired can be the best thing that can happen to you ... it you take the opportunity to find something that you are passionate about, something that "turns you on," something that you love to do.

3. SUCCESS ACTION STEPS

========================================================

Here are my ten Valentine's Gifts for YOU!

Enjoy and then TAKE ACTION!

1) THE GIFT OF LOVE...

When you are loving

you are not judging.

And when you are not judging,

you can find lots to love in others.

2) THE GIFT OF LISTENING...

But you must REALLY listen.

No interrupting, no daydreaming,

no planning your response.

Just listening.

3) THE GIFT OF AFFECTION...

Be generous with appropriate hugs,

kisses, pats on the back and handholds.

Let these small actions demonstrate the

love you have for family members and friends.

4) THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER...

Clip cartoons.

Share articles and funny stories.

Your gift will say,

"I love to laugh with you."

5) THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE...

It can be a simple

"Thanks for the help" note or a full sonnet.

A brief, handwritten note may be remembered

for a lifetime, and may even change a life.

6) THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT...

A simple and sincere,

"You look great in red," "You did a super

job" or "That was a wonderful meal"

can make someone's day.

7) THE GIFT OF A FAVOR...

Every day, go out of your way

to do something kind.

8) THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE...

There are times when we want nothing

better than to be left alone.

Be sensitive to those times and give the

gift of solitude to others.

9) THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION...

The easiest way to feel good is

to extend a kind word to someone,

really it's not that hard to say,

Hello or Thank You.

10) THE GIFT OF A SMILE...

A smile "improves your face value."

So dispense them liberally,

you'll feel better about yourself

and everyone you meet.

4. HUMOR BREAK

========================================================

THE JOY OF PARENTING:

Cleaning your house while your kids are at home is like

trying to shovel the driveway in the middle of a snowstorm.

An alarm clock is a device for waking people up who don't

have small children.

There are only two things a child will share willingly:

communicable diseases and their mother's age.

Kids really brighten a household ... they never turn off any

lights.

Shouting to make your kids obey is like using the horn to

steer your car, and you get about the same results!

Any child can tell you that the sole purpose of a middle

name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.
