1. NEWS YOU CAN USE ===================================================
IT'S YOUR NETWORK SMARTY
Studies show that 51% of over-55 workers and 36% of Gen Xers found a
new position by networking. Only 3% of all employees found their new
job on the Internet.
ACTION STEPS: Read-no wait-devour the "Network or Perish" article that
follows and then take action as if your future depends on it…it does!
Source: Fortune, Dec 10, 2001, p. 278.
LAUGHTER WILL KEEP YOU HEALTHY
Studies show that laughter has the following mental and physical health
benefits. Laughter…
1. Gives you a moderate cardiovascular workout.
2. Cranks up your endorphins and reduces stress.
3. Reduces chronic pains associated with muscle tension.
4. Builds your self-confidence.
5. Enhances your immune system.
ACTION STEPS:
1. Go ahead and make yourself laugh…yes right now. If you wait until
someone tells you something funny you may have to wait a long time.
(If you need a little help go to my humor break.)
2. Stick smiley faces on your phone and smile or better yet laugh before
you pick it up. People on the other side will "see" you laugh and it
will make you feel better.
3. Tell a joke. The more you give the more you get. And yes, it applies
to laughter too.
4. Hang out with funny…or at least happy people. This stuff is catching!!!
So be sure you catch the right stuff.
5. Make fun of yourself. Self-deprecating humor is powerful because
it allows you to get off your "high horse" gracefully.
6. If you still need more help join a laughter club. To find one in
your area go to www.worldlaughtertour.com

WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE
Mr. Albert C. Hanna is currently in the process of climbing Mt. Everest.
(Which means he is spending more than $65,000 plus travel and personal
expenses to have a one-in-four chance to die.) No big deal? Actually
it is a big deal because Mr. Hanna is, are you ready for this, 72 years
of age. If he reaches the top of Mt. Everest on May 25 he will be the
oldest ever…actually by a decade…to have climbed the "Seven Summits."
And oh by the way Mr. Hanna is a mortgage banker from Chicago who had
not "climbed anything until age 58." (Lest you think it is a pipe dream,
this is his fourth attempt at Mt. Everest. The last time, in 2000, he
got within 325 feet of the top. And while we're at it, let me remind
you that last year Erik Weihenmayer…a blind person…did make it all the
way to the top.
ACTION STEPS: Quit making excuses. You can do so much more than you
ever give yourself credit for. Do what you fear…climb your own Mt. Everest,
whatever your Mt. Everest may be …and the death of fear is certain.

2. NETWORK OR PERISH By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP ===================================================
Just been laid off? Right sized, downsized or "capsized"? What's going
to help you find your next job faster? Or better find your dream job?
In coaching a number of highly successful professionals I have found
that the answer to those questions is frequently not what you know,
but whom you know…that is your network. In this era of "churn"-a term
I use to describe the rapid turnover of highly skilled employees like
you-the who you know will open the door. And the what you know will
keep it open. That means being really sharp-knowing your stuff-only
benefits you if you have a really powerful and influential network.
1. Know thyself. Know your strengths. That's your ammunition,
which will enable you to help others. Know your weaknesses. That's how
you will figure out what groups to join and whom you'll want to seek
out and network with at the next meeting.
2. Be selective. Time is the second most precious resource. Be
sure to get involved with associations and organizations that can help
you achieve your lifetime goals. When networking, seek out people in
leadership positions. They have a large center of influence, know a
lot of influential people and can provide you with valuable leads
3. Make them glad they talked with you. Networking should be
a win-win activity. Ask yourself: What proportion of the time am I talking
about myself. Do you have "I" disease? Remember most people like talking
about themselves. Let them. It will help you figure out what their needs
are! And once you meet those, you've made a powerful addition to your
network.
4. Introduce yourself. Always state your full name. (Yes do this
even if you are both wearing a nametag). Repeat their name immediately
and use it every chance you get. It will help you remember their name
and affirm both of you. Remember, we all like to feel good about ourselves!
Plus we like to hang out with people who make us feel good about ourselves.
(This stuff is catching!)
5. Ask open-ended questions. Ask questions which cannot be answered
with "yes" or "no." Examples: "What advice would you give someone just
starting out in real estate?" "How can I help you?" These types of questions
will provide you with a lot of powerful information.
6. Actively search for the double win. Be on the lookout for
issues, trends, clients, and developments beneficial to both of you.
Example: "Jane, what type of expertise do you have that my CEO might
be interested in?" This attitude shows that you are interested in helping
the other party win.
7. Look for commonalties. Search for such things as your alma
mater, birthplace, favorite sports, anything that will help you remember
the other person, and help them remember you.
8. Offer your business card. And be sure to get theirs. Read
it and make a positive comment. Use the back to take notes. (By the
way if you promise anything, DO IT, and do it in a timely fashion! Otherwise
keep your mouth shut!)
9. Make the next appointment. For valuable contacts make a phone,
or in-person, appointment. Do it before you go on to the next person.
10. Send a note. Typically I do this on the plane using custom
designed postcards. Your note should stress win-win. Example: "Thank
you, Bill - for your many insights. I really got a lot out of our conversation.
As promised I will keep you in mind when we need someone with your expertise."
11. Track and keep in touch. Use a computer to track your valuable
contacts. At least three times per year send an article of interest,
ideally one that you have published. Sending a birthday (or other occasion)
card is another great way to keep in touch.
12. Refer leads. Let your network know about other consultants
or vendors who have done an exceptional job. Every time you match a
want with a need, you've increased your network by two. Only refer individuals
who adhere to the same standards as you do. Your reputation is very
precious. Be sure to act accordingly.
13. Pay tribute. If you get a lead, or if you've been provided
with a particularly valuable piece of advice, be sure to say "thank
you" with a small token of appreciation. These 13 strategies have helped
me increase my earning power, faster. Practice them relentlessly and
they will do the same for you! ===================================================

3. HUMOR BREAK =================================================== Only
In America... Will people order a double cheeseburger, super sized fries
and a DIET coke because they're concerned about their weight. Will a
