NEWS YOU CAN USE ======================================================== OPTIMISM PAYS Harvard historian and economist David Landes concludes in a new book "Culture Matters: How Values Shape Human Progress (Basic Books): "No empowerment is so effective as self-empowerment. In this world, the optimists have it, not because they are always right, but because they are positive. Even when wrong, they are positive, and that is the way of achievement." A historical case in point is Teddy Roosevelt and his brother Elliott. Both were born into a family of privileges. Teddy who was extremely sick, became one of the best known US Presidents and prospered. Brother Elliot, who was the golden boy of the family, died a failure at age 34. (Even psychologist are catching on. See next item.) ACTION STEP: Develop your positive explanatory style. Any time something negative happens to you, use your mental energy to find the good in the bad. For example, a client who had lost vast sums of money in Florida real estate replied when asked how he was able to take it so well: "This gives me a new challenge. My life was getting kind of boring anyway." "POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY" CATCHING ON Thanks to Martin Seligman, U. of Penn psychologist and former president of the American Psychological Association (APA) "positive psychology" is taking the place of pathology as a way to help people live better lives. According to clinical research "optimists enjoy heartier immune systems; [actually]... look harder for negative information than pessimists so they can improve decision-making;" have improved mental agility; and are more creative. Similarly, "HIV patients who were optimists showed fewer symptoms, took better care of themselves and generally coped better than other AIDS patients." (I report this with a bit of pride. After all I have been living, teaching and writing about the power of a positive attitude for more that a decade!) ACTION STEP: How much more proof do you need? Get busy now and look for the positive and you will find it. Source: The Sun, 6/13/00, p. HYPERCHARGE YOUR CAREER by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP ======================================================== Companies are merging, downsizing, "capsizing." And job security seems to be gone forever. Time to get depressed, Right? WRONG! Yes, we are in a paradigm shift. Yes, things are changing at hyperspeed! And yes, job security is gone forever! Never ever will you be with one company for 30 years and then retire. ThatÕs great! Why? First the obvious. Being with the same company for thirty years is BOOORING! Even more important, its unlikely that youÕll ever maximize your personal potential. In addition, being in the same career pattern for that length of time makes it very unlikely that youÕll have the opportunity to build on your strength. IDENTIFY YOUR STRENGTHS To hypercharge your career, you must first determine what you are good at. Like it or not, there are no perfect people. Of the 6 billion people on earth none is perfect. Every human being is a composite of strengths and weaknesses. Most of us spend a lot of time focusing on our weaknesses, focusing on the things we do not want to be, and wishing that we were more like someone else. Or worse, attempt to transform weaknesses into strength. (That's the worst advice I was ever given!) Don't squander your valuable mental energies with such counter-productive behavior. Instead, on your next day off, do the following: 1. Get a writing pad. 2. Divide the paper in half. 3. Label the left side "Strengths," the right side "Weaknesses." 4. Put on some classical music. 5. Get yourself a cup of your favorite brew. 6. Make yourself comfortable and think of all the things that you are proud of. What do you do very well? What things give you joy and satisfaction? What is it that comes easily to you? Do not give up until you have filled just about the entire column. 7. Do the same thing for your weaknesses. Think of all the things that you wish were different about you, that you would like to do better, or that you want to change. What you can do with this valuable information? BUILD ON YOUR STRENGTHS First look at your strengths. If you are currently in a career track, ask yourself whether your career lets you capitalize on your strengths. Will the things that you identified help you excel in your chosen career? Are these the skills and attributes of others who have succeeded in such a career? If the answer is yes, you should stick with it. Two things are very likely: (1) you love your job and (2) you will be successful in it! More about that in just a moment. What if you donÕt have a job or are not in a career track right now. In other words, what if you don't know what you want to do when you grow up, or youÕve recently been laid off? Don't let that bother you. In today's rapidly changing world, people make more than three career changes in their lifetime. And getting laid off may just be the best thing that ever happened to you. Why? Because most of us get into our career by accident, instead of by design. In that case you are probably not building on your strengths. Therefore, getting fired may reposition you into a career in which you will be able to build on your strengths. To accomplish this, take a look at your strengths and list all the careers and hobbies that you can think of that will let you build on your strengths. If you can't think of any, show your list of strengths to your mentor, and ask him/her to help you generate that list. If you know very little about a particular career, meet with people who have succeeded in that career. Find out what has helped them to succeed. Match that list to your strengths. If you have a close overlap you are on the right track. Narrow it down even further by working or volunteering temporarily to see if your "dream" career is really right for you. THROW AWAY YOUR WEAKNESSES What about the weaknesses that you have identified? Throw them away! All of them? No, not quite. Get out your list of lifetime goals. (You do have at least three clearly defined, written, fire in the belly life time goals, donÕt you? If not, establish them right now, because it is the one attribute that all winners have in common. DonÕt know how to get started? Get my book "Make It a Winning Life: Success Strategies or Life, Love, and Business," it will give you all the tools you need to translate your dreams into reality). Now evaluate which of your weaknesses interfere with you being able to attain your lifetime goals and which ones will interfere with you excelling in your chosen profession. For these establish an action plan to get them to an acceptable level. For example, if you dislike public speaking, join a local Toastmasters group and practice as often as you can. Speaking is like most skillsthe more you practice, the more at ease you feel, and the better you get. If you are your own worst enemy, commit to becoming your own best friend, catch yourself doing things right, and reward yourself every time you do. If you have a fear of failure, set yourself up for success by breaking complex tasks into small, incremental steps so that you can catch yourself succeeding. Now, what about the weaknesses that will not affect the attainment of your lifetime goals? Get rid of them. An executive I was coaching had such difficulty with this that he recorded his weaknesses onto an audiotape. Then he took a hammer and smashed it. This physical act helped him get rid of his weaknesses once and for all. You're right, this did not actually get rid of his weaknesses, but it did allow him to make peace with an imperfect self. This will make you more serene and comfortable, allow you to "get off your case," build on your strengths, and hypercharge your career. ======================================================== 3. SUCCESS ACTION STEPS ======================================================== The following message was sent to me from the Dalai Lama (that's what the e-mail said). Be sure to take action RIGHT NOW!!! 1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. 2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson. 3. Follow the three R's: Respect for self, Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions. 4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. 5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly. 6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship. 7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. 8. Spend some time alone every day. 9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values. 10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. 11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. 12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life. 13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past. 14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality. 15. Be gentle with the earth. 16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before. 17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. 18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. 19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. I also know that dreams really do come true and you have my Best Wishes and my best efforts in those. Regards, Dalai Lama ======================================================== 5.
