INSIGHT BREAK
The next time you feel like complaining, remember that your garbage disposal probably eats better than 30 percent of the people in the world.

NATURE VS. NURTURE-THE LATEST FINDINGS
Scientists have debated this question forever. Not too long ago they settled on a compromise--both your genes and your upbringing are responsible for who you become, better known as the "succotash" model. Since they didn't know what percent was responsible for what, they assumed that it was about 50-50. The latest findings however say it is more like 100% each depending on what goes on in your environment. In other words "the innate potential we call nature [genes] becomes reality only when it is exposed to a certain kind of nurture. A gene contributes 0% of what you become if you don't grow up in an environment that turns it on, and environment contributes 0% if you lack the gene it acts on. But if both the gene and the environment that turns it on are present, then it's as if each contributes 100%."
ACTION STEPS
Get in the drivers seat of your life! You may be able to control who you become by behaving as if you have already arrived. As a parent or manager, treat people the way you would like them to become, not the way they are. After all you can't control your or their genes, but you can provide the environment (nurture) that helps people achieve their maximum potential. And if the right gene is present you have a very high probability of success. (Read more in section 3.)

3. POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE ATTITUDE--IT'S YOUR CHOICE (Anonymous)
===================================================
About four weeks ago lady luck took another day off. That was the day Superwoman, that's my wife of 39 years, was told that she has breast cancer. The reason why I said "another day off" is because this will be Marcela's third cancer. And each cancer has been an entirely different cancer. When we found out both of us felt less--actually much less--than our normal positive self. (If you've read my "Make it a Winning Life" book you already know that Superwoman was born with a positive gene and that she is the one that helped me convert from being an eternal pessimist to becoming an eternal optimist.) About the same time Susan Carr from SAP America e-mailed me the following article with a request to share it with others which is what I'm doing right now. It has helped Marcela and I get back into a positive state by continuing to make the right choices every day. It is so powerful that it deserves your full attention.

LET IT REALLY SINK IN--THEN CHOOSE
John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, John was telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made Fred curious, so one day Fred asked John, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"

John replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. "

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," Fred protested.

"Yes, it is," John said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."

Soon thereafter, Fred left the company to start his own business and lost touch with John. But Fred often thought about him when he made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, Fred heard that John had been involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower on which John had been working. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, John was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. Fred saw him about six months after the accident and I asked him how he was doing. John replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Want to see my scars?"

Fred declined to see his wounds but did ask what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," John replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" Fred asked. John continued, "…the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action.

"What did you do?" Fred asked. "Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything? 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'." Over their laughter, I told them, "I can choose to live or die. I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

John lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude.

Fred learned that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

You have two choices now:
1. Delete this.
2. Forward it to the people you care about.
You know the choice I made.

I dialed a wrong number the other day and got the following recording: "I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you are one of the changes."
