Chase Your Passion Not Your Pay
Can't make a living doing what you love to do? Don't know how to transform your hobby into cash? Let me introduce you to Mike Wolf. Mike loves model trains. Influenced by his grandfather who worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. Mike started working for a neighbor who made toy trains as a youngster. Back then he made all of $1.50 per hour. By age 12 he was already selling his first model trains from the basement of his parents' house in Laurel, MD. Today Mike is 40+ years of age and his company M.T.H. Electric Trains employs more than 100 people and generates about $60 million in revenue per year. According to Maryland's Howard County officials, M.T.H. is "one of the fastest-growing light manufacturing firms in Howard County."

2. GETTING FIRED IS THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU
===================================================
I know these are trying times, and the last thing you want to hear from me is that it's a good thing that you've just been fired. But perhaps it is? Here is why.
Statistics tell us that only 19% of the US population love what they do. Twenty five percent hate it! And the rest could take it or leave it! Unfortunately the people who either hate or are neutral about their jobs typically find it difficult to succeed, regardless how hard they try or how long they work at it! And for them, getting fired may be just what the doctor ordered, because it will give them the impetus to find something that they love to do!

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH JOB OR CAREER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
How do you know whether you should look for a similar job or switch careers? Find out by answering the following seven questions about the job you've just lost. (If you are fortunate and still have a job, use your current job as your point of reference.)
1. When your opportunity clock rang in the morning were you anxious to get up and go to work?
2. Are you excited to be in your current profession?
3. Did you love what you do? (Note I said love not like - there is a big difference!)
4. Did you feel privileged to be part of your industry?
5. Did work seem like play to you?
6. Were you wondering why you were being paid so well?
7. Were you looking forward to work, at least four out of five days each week (80% of the time)?
If you answered YES to all seven questions you are in your dream career and should stick with it because you have a very high probability that you are on the way to the top. If not read on, so you too can find out how to "work" less and enjoy more.

AVOID SEEKING PERFECTION
But first, regarding question number seven. Why not a 100% of the time? Because there is no perfect job; every job has some aspects that you will not care for. For example, I am a professional speaker, management consultant and executive coach and love what I do. At times I have so much fun, that I wonder why I am being paid so well for it. It almost seems that I should be paying the audience or client. (Pretend you did not read that, especially if you are a meeting planner or one of my clients!) But there is a down side to speaking, consulting and coaching. It's traveling, especially airline travel, (I call it cattle herding), and being away from my wife and my own bed. So, for me, traveling is the other 20 percent. That's the price I happily pay to do the things I really love to do. (That's why Superwoman, that's my wife of 41 years and business partner, tells prospective clients: "Wolf speaks, consults and coaches for free, but he charges for travel.")

FIND YOUR PASSION
Here is another way you can find out if you are passionate about your current career. Imagine that you have just won the BIG ONE. Six million dollars in the Lottery. What the heck, we're dreaming here, so let's make it 60 million! Now assume you take the next 12 months to "get everything you have always wanted to do out of your system." You buy yourself that dream house, purchase a Rolls Royce, go on every "once in a life" vacation you have always dreamt about, set aside enough money for you, every family member, relative and anyone else who has ever been nice to you. At the end of the 12 months or at the point when you are getting tired of playing, whichever comes first, ask yourself: What will I do with the rest of my life? And whatever pops in your head at the very moment you ask that question, is what you should start pursuing NOW!

DON'T HAVE THE SKILLS NOR THE EDUCATION?
Get yourself a temporary job to help pay the bills. Make time to get the skills and the education you need. Watch less TV, go to fewer ball games so you can go to school in the evening and study on weekends. Do whatever it takes to prepare yourself for your dream job. After you have prepared yourself, work part time in your dream job. Can't get paid for it? Volunteer. Do whatever it takes, pay any price, and make any sacrifice, just do it! Once you are certain that you have found your dream career, give up the temporary job. Not getting paid as much as in your former job? Not to worry. Just stay with your dream job. I've finally learned after more than 50 years of "working" that overnight success takes a long time. But I've also learned that once you find what you LOVE to do you will make more money, much more money than you have ever thought possible. Want proof? Look at the people you admire. People who have made it to the top in their chosen profession. I bet that virtually all of them, love what they do. And by the way it does not matter what profession they are in because there is no such as thing as a "glamour" profession. A friend of ours lives in a $1.5 million mansion and has more money then he'll ever be able to use in his life-time. His profession? He is a plumber! Yes, he owns a plumbing contracting company, but most importantly he is passionate about what he does. On the other hand I can introduce you to many a lawyer, physician or others who are in so called "glamour professions" who do not care for what they do, and who have trouble paying the mortgage.

BUT I'M TOO OLD
Whenever I talk about starting a new career someone invariably has enough courage to rationalize why that is a silly idea. "After all," they say, "I've been in IT for 25 years. I'm just too old to start a new career now!" I really take exception, because you are never too old unless you decide that you are too old. For example, age did not stop Bedtime for Bonzo actor Ronald Reagan from becoming President of the United States a couple days short of age 70. Age did not stop Kentucky Fried Chicken's Colonel Sanders from starting that "small" franchise at age 65 with his first retirement check of less than $100. Nor did age stop Lee Iacocca when at age 72 he started EV Global Motors, a company that designs and markets battery-powered bicycles, electric scooters and light electric vehicles similar to golf carts.

YABUT
Of course there are always those who have other excuses. (I refer to them as the YaBut's.) A common refrain is: "Yabut, the economy is bad and nobody wants to hire me." If that's your excuse, I would like to take it away from you by introducing you to Ed Hommer. Ed had everything going for him. He was in the prime of his life (26 years old), an avid backcountry skier, climber, and airline pilot and about to become a new dad. He was climbing Mount McKinley when tragedy struck. A freak accident prevented him from making the return trip. It took five days before rescuers could get to him. By then "his feet had frozen into solid blocks of uselessness" which had to be amputated. Totally devastated and depressed, he had lost his dream job-major airlines do not permit double amputees to fly-and his hobby-it's hard to go rock climbing without feet, until he became totally disgusted with himself and decided that "there had to be a way out." He got prosthetics, and with a steely determination became re-qualified to fly for American Airlines so that he could continue to do what he loved to do. And to top it all off he also started skiing and rock climbing again and even scaled the summit of Mount McKinley to make peace with himself and the mountain. (Ed was the first double amputee to achieve this incredible feat.) So what is your excuse?
In short, getting fired may be the best thing that can happen to you ... if you take the opportunity to find something that you are passionate about, something that "turns you on", something that you love to do, and then pursue it with every fiber of your body so that you get really great at it and never ever have to "work" again.
