INSIGHT BREAK

Change your thoughts, and you change your world.

—Norman Vincent Peale

1. NEWS YOU CAN USE

========================================================

YOUR BRAIN IS PLASTIC

The latest brain research has overturned what was once accepted as dogma. Our brains are not like computers, nor do they operate like a circuit board which has been programmed at birth. Instead our brains are incredibly adaptable-they have "neural plasticity." Your brain continually remodels itself as a result of your experiences, injury, learning, hormones, aging and countless other inputs. That means that your brain "grows" all the time! Even to the extent that if they remove half a brain, as they did at Johns Hopkins University for Maranda Fransisco at age 4, the other half takes over. Restoring as it did for Maranda, who is now an active teenager, virtually all of her functions. In fact the brain keeps growing as it gets more exercise. The reason, your 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons, have branches like trees. And each time a nerve cell is stimulated it branches out forming new connections with other neurons. Meaning that the more experiences you get the richer and larger your view of the world, or the wiser you become. SOLUTION: Never stop learning, keep your brain active, expose yourself to all kinds of new and uncomfortable experiences. The more you do, the more likely your brain will remain healthy and you will become wise. In short: Use it or lose it!

ATTITUDE POWER

People who cultivate consistently positive attitudes, expect great things and work hard for those things, are more likely to achieve them. In fact, research by psychologist Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania revealed that optimistic people are happier, healthier and more successful than those with a negative outlook on life. A new branch of medicine-psychoneuroimmunology-studies the relationship between mental attitude and health. Physicians have found that a positive attitude can result in faster recovery from surgery and burns, more resistance to arthritis and cancer, improved immune function and help you live a healthier, happier and wealthier life! The reason for this is that our brain-produces substances-neuropeptides-which transmit chemical messages that direct our immune system. When you think positively, these messages enhance our immune system and enable us to stay healthy. On the other hand when you are depressed, they tell your body, "Why bother?" As a result we get even more depressed and it becomes a vicious cycle. SOLUTION: Learn to develop a positive attitude (see article below).

2. HOW TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP

========================================================

Dear Wolf,

As a single working Mom struggling to balance my home, financial and family responsibilities, life gets very discouraging and at times depression sets in. What advice could you give me to help me through my daily trials?

Signed,

Karen Roman, Glenpool, OK

Karen, here are specific things you can do to help maintain a positive attitude when daily struggles seem to get you down. It's important for you to recognize that a positive attitude does not pop into your mind by itself. How you feel is a decision you have to make every day. If you feel down, you must force yourself to look around and find something you can feel good about. One way is to start each day in a positive way. Here is how:

=> Start softly. Use a clock radio that plays music that is soft and pleasant to wake you up. DonÕt use a loud alarm clock.

=> Start slowly. Allow yourself enough time to prepare for the dayÕs activities at a civilized pace. DonÕt get up at the last possible moment.

=> Focus on the good stuff. Think of three specific things you can be grateful for while sitting on the "throne." Do this every day! DonÕt worry about how original you are.

=> Take advantage of the "throne." Keep a positive, motivational book in your bathroom. (A great one is Make it a Winning Life: Success Strategies for Life, Love and Business, by yours truly. Or any of the Chicken Soup books by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen). Any time you feel down, turn to an inspirational part and give yourself an instant pick-me-up.

=> Start positively. Think about the positive things you expect to accomplish today. DonÕt listen to news of the worldÕs problems or worry about your own problems while you are getting your day started.

=> Eat a healthy breakfast. DonÕt drug yourself with only coffee or cigarettes.

=> Make yourself laugh. If you read the paper while eating breakfast, skip the negative 'stinking thinking' news. Skim the headlines to keep yourself informed. Read the comics before you put the paper away, and be sure to make yourself laugh. Yes, I said MAKE yourself laugh!

=> Give love. Find something positive to say to your children and be sure to tell them how much you love them before they or you leave home. DonÕt pick on them as the last thing you do before you see them off to school. (For those of you who are married do the same for your spouse!)

As you go about your dayÕs activities, become aware of your thoughts. Any time a negative thought, anger, or sadness creeps into your mind substitute a positive thought in its place. When you think positively about yourself, you work harder at what you want to do-and give up less easily. You make a better impression on others, which encourages them to help you. When you think more positively about your colleagues, employees, spouse and children, you build stronger and more productive relationships-leading to greater success at work and at home.

This is really important because your mind can only hold one thought at a time. It can be a positive or a negative thought. It is YOUR choice. DonÕt give that choice to anyone or anything else!

INSIGHT BREAK

HOW TO BE HAPPY

Are you almost disgusted with life, little man?

IÕll tell you a wonderful trick

That will bring you contentment, if anything can,

Do something for somebody, quick!

Are you awfully tired with play, little girl?

Wearied, discouraged, and sick-

IÕll tell you the loveliest game in the world,

Do something for somebody, quick!

Though it rains, like the rain of the flood, little man,

And the clouds are forbidding and thick,

You can make the sun shine in your soul, little man,

Do something for somebody, quick!

Though the stars are like brass overhead, little girl,

And the walks like a well-heated brick,

And our earthly affairs in a terrible whirl,

Do something for somebody, quick!

3. SUCCESS ACTION STEPS

by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP

========================================================

GET EXCITED

Yes, you read correctly. Getting excited about what you do is just as much a choice as getting depressed. Do not give that choice to someone or something else!

SHORTCUT TO SUCCESS

Identify someone you admire, ideally someone you know really well. Then identify a person you canÕt stand. Get a sheet of paper, draw a line down the middle. Label the left column Positive Qualities, and the right Negative Qualities. Next write all the qualities—attributes, traits, and behaviors, of the person you admire in the left column. Do the same thing for the person you dislike, except put those traits in the right column. Next prioritize each list. You now have constructed your blueprint for success. Take Action: Start practicing the behavior you admire most in others (#1 in the left column) at every opportunity for at least 21 days or until it becomes a new habit. (You know you have developed a habit when the behavior becomes part of you, and you no longer have to think about it). Once you have made #1 quality your own, go to #2 until you are the person you really want to be. What about the right column? Use it as a list of what not to do, no matter how tempting it may be!

LISTEN TO YOUR SELF-TALK

Is it generally focused on the past, the present, or the future? When you catch yourself focusing on the past, shift gears and focus your mental energies on what you are doing right now. If you are idle, focus on what one "big thing" you plan to do in the future. Write it on several Post it notes. Stick them on your computer and your desk and at home on your refrigerator and your mirror where you brush your teeth two times every day. Any time you are idle visualize yourself experiencing the benefits of accomplishing this one "big thing."
