In fact, obesity is now the second leading cause of preventable death after smoking (325,000 death/year in the US). Accordingto the October 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association our nation is confronting "an obesity epidemic." (17.9% of the US population is obese.) Obese is defined as a body-mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. To calculate your BMI take your metric weight and divide it by your metric height squared as follows: Step 1: Multiply your weight in lbs. by 0.45 = metric weight.
=> Less than 19 = underweight => 19 - 24.9 = normal weight => 25 - 29.9 = overweight (over 50% of US population) => 30 or more = obese (17.9% of US population). SOLUTION: Eat less, especially fats, (quit eating when it tastes the best) and move more. (See the article in Section 2.) TAKE OWNERSHIP Collectively we are suffering from "it's-not-my-fault syndrome," also referred to as "victimology." Just about all of our bad habits have been turned into "diseases." It started with drinking too much, "alcoholism," and smoking excessively, "nicotine addiction," and abusing drugs, "drug addiction." All of these I can accept intuitively, although I must tell you that I have never put anything into my mouth or body accidentally. But it has gotten out of hand. A number of disciplines, including law, neurology, biology, nutrition, psychiatry, and psychology, have joined forces to usher in this new age of "it's-not-my-fault." Combine law and psychiatry and you get the anabolic-steroid defense. Law and nutrition produced the convenient "Twinkie defense" (sugar made me do it). Law plus pop psychology plus technology give us "computer addiction." Things have gotten so bad that Roger Conner, executive director of Washington's liberal American Alliance for Rights and Responsibilities lamented that "the R word in our language is responsibility, and it has dropped from the policy dialogue in America." Clearly a society can't operate if everyone has rights and no one has responsibilities. SOLUTION: Take charge of your life by living in accordance with the axiom "If it is to be, it is up to me!" Rinke, PhD, CSP ======================================================== One of the reason that we are losing the "battle of the bulge" is that we've made our lives too efficient-cars, TV remotes, elevators, moving walkways etc. The good news for couch potatoes: You don't need to become a health freak, you just need to move more. A study, conducted at the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research, reported in the January 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, randomly assigned 235 sedentary men and woman to one of two groups: the "lifestyle" group-also referred to as the "exercise lite group"-was taught to fit more physical activity into their daily routine and the "structured" group which used a fitness center for a vigorous and structured exercise routine. To the researches' surprise the exercise lite group achieved slightly better benefits than the structured group. For example the exercise lite group reduced their body fat by 2.4% while the structured group reduced it by 1.9%-about equal to a reduction of one clothing size. Both groups also reduced their systolic and diastolic blood pressure-3.6 mm and 5.4 mm in the exercise lite group and 3.3 mm and 5.1 mm respectively in the structured group. Increase your moderate activity for a cumulative total of at least 30 minutes per day and you can expect to reduce your weight, especially if you couple it with eating less food and fat. You will also reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, some types of cancers, hypertension and adult on-set diabetes. In addition you will feel better-mentally and physically. Here is how to get started with an exercise lite program: => Don't just sit there. Anytime you have to wait for something or someone-airplane, appointment, order-move about, stretch or do something. In fact consider sitting and inactivity "body enemy #1." => Take a hike. Make it a habit to take your dog for a 20-30 minute walk every day. Don't have a dog? No problem-take yourself for a walk-you're worth more than any dog. => Be alarmed. Activate the alarm on your computer to remind you to stretch or move around about every half an hour. => Walk your talk. Get out of your office chair and visit with your team members. Fringe benefit-your organization's productivity will increase. => Take a detour. When going to lunch take the long way, and leave the car behind. => Get up. Any time you've been inactive for some time-for example when watching TV-get up during the commercial and take a mini walk or stretch. => Go the extra mile. Park at the farthest end of the parking lot. Fringe benefit-you seldom have to hunt for a space. => Use the steps. Any time you have to go up fewer than three floors leave the elevator behind. => Make it difficult. When needing to go anywhere-the bathroom, the supply room, the vending machine-go the long way. => Stand up. Figure out what you can do to get out of your chair. Use a stand up desk, make calls while standing, have stand-up meetings. Fringe benefit-stand up meetings will cut your meeting times in half. => Eat on the run. Transform your lunch break into a walk break. Instead of a sit-down lunch eat an apple, pear, banana, vegetable sticks or other finger foods while walking. => Avoid your car. Before driving somewhere, consider walking or biking. Instead of using the drive-through, walk in. => Play hard. Pick recreating that makes you move, such as hiking, tennis, bowling, dancing or swimming. => Talk your walk. Instead of sitting, get your talking done while taking team members, family or friends for a walk. => Carry it. Instead of driving to the grocery pick-up area, carry your groceries to your car. => Grow it. Establish a small garden and grow the things that are much better fresh such as asparagus, string beans, radishes, salads and tomatoes. => Do it. But if you met her you would never know it, because of her super positive attitude. Be sure to mentally prepare yourself for life's down-turns, because there are many. Even more important, be sure to always expect the best, because over the long term you and I get what we expect. Remember it's not what happens to you, it's what you do about it that really counts! AVOID PERFECTIONISM Very few things are perfect in this world, so be sure to recognize that falling short of perfection, even making mistakes, is not failure. It's a lesson learned. Learn it, then get on with your life. Remember that there is no such thing as failure-only outcomes. If your efforts produce an outcome that is less successful than you had hoped, don't say, I'm a failure. Instead, say, next time I'll do better. ======================================================== 4.
