1. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE

It's no longer about how long you live--it's how long you live well
Endurance activities, like running, cycling, triathlon and trekking continue to attract an ever-growing number of middle-age adults. Obviously, there's an inevitable performance decline with aging, however, competitive non-elites to world-class master athletes are breaking down that barrier. A 38-year-old mother with 10 marathons under her belt, Romania's Constantina Tomescu-Dita, won the women's Olympic marathon in Beijing! (For an even more startling record, see paragraph #4 below.)
As researchers and physiologists turn to studying master athletes, it's clear that if people can keep up their training there's no reason they can't continue to put in solid performances well into middleage. In fact, non-elites who decide to get serious about their endurance sport late (e.g., mid-to-late 30's) are especially likely to maintain their performance or even improve with age.
As we age, factors such as diet, body weight, time constraints and stress are just as likely to hinder sports performances. These manageable factors can make a significant difference for middle-age athletes who come with high expectations and lots of nutrition misinformation.
ACTION STEP: Start exercising today and encourage your clients to do the same. To get started on the right foot (pun intended) read our "Advanced Sports Nutrition: Fine-Tune Your Food and Fluid Intake for Optimal Training and Performance," (C191) by D. Benardot, (http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cenutr.html#C191) or "Endurance Sports Nutrition: Strategies for Training, Racing, and Recovery," (C189) by S. G. Eberle, (http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cenutr.html#C189). Both are approved for 30 CPEUs.

3. HOW TO MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE EVEN DURING TOUGH TIMES--PART II

In the previous eNL (http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cenl.htm) I described the following strategies to help you maintain a positive attitude:
o Start your day softly.
o Start slowly.
o Focus on the good stuff.
o Take advantage of the "throne."
o Start positively.
o Exercise.
o Make yourself laugh
o Make the most of your commute
o Give love.

Once you get the day started be sure to:

Use positive greetings. Take advantage of the "fact" that many people want to know how you're doing. They do, don't they? Why else would they say, "How are you?" (Are you chuckling, or are you taking me too seriously?) Right, that's merely a rhetorical question. However, how you respond is very important. Do you answer on autopilot with "Fine"? Or worse, do you reply with: "Not too bad" or "It could be worse." Or do you forget that it is a rhetorical question, and proceed to tell the other person everything she didn't really want to know? Instead, make it a habit to answer in a positive fashion with "Great", "Fantastic," "Excellent" or, on days when you don't feel quite as positive, with "Good, and I'm getting better!" This strategy will send a positive affirmation to your subconscious and reinforce the positive programming you started in the morning. See http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cenl.htm. Because your subconscious is unable to tell fact from fiction, it will accept everything you send it as if it were true. Therefore you are creating your own positive "reality." Also be sure to say farewell in a positive fashion. Instead of using the worn out phrase "Have a good day," remind yourself and others that they are in charge of their lives, by saying. "MAKE it a great day!"

Smile. Find something positive to say to everyone you care about and don't forget to smile. Somehow at the end of the day you will feel much better about the human race, your profession and most importantly about yourself. Why? Because whatever you give is what you get!

Have fun. Make a decision throughout the day that no matter how tough things get, you expect to have fun, because if it's fun it will get done!

Transform your thoughts. Any time a negative thought, anger, jealousy or sadness creeps into your mind, substitute something positive in its place. When you think positively, work seems much easier and enjoyable, and you will be much more energized and encouraged. You make a better impression on your clients, co-workers and even your boss, which encourages them to think more favorably of you, which comes in handy when your boss has to select someone to promote or lay off. Plus when you think more positively about others, you build stronger and more productive relationships--leading to greater success and satisfaction at work and at home.

Choose to consistently focus on the positive and you will live a happier, healthier and maybe even wealthier life even during these tough times.

If you would like to learn other hard hitting strategies that will help you survive these tough times, read my "How to Maximize Professional Potential & Increase Your Earning Power in Nutrition & Dietetics, 3ed Edition," (C187) approved for 30 CPEUs, available at http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cepd.html#C187.

Here is what one customer had to say about this powerful CPE program:
"I found the study guide extremely helpful. It was exactly what I needed after having 2 children to get me thinking again about my career in dietetics. Thank you"
--Amanda Nanks, RD

4. OTHER NEWS YOU CAN USE

You can do just about anything
Jennifer Figge is the first woman to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. The 56-year-old (yes you read correctly) left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's western coast on Jan. 12, 2009 battling waves of up to 30 feet (9 meters) and strong winds. She had originally planned to swim to the Bahamas, but inclement weather forced her to veer 1,000 miles (1,610 kms) off course to Trinidad, where she arrived on Feb. 5. 2009.

ACTION STEPS
Think of Jennifer Figge, when you are on the verge of talking yourself out of an opportunity that is knocking on your door. She is proof positive that YOU can do just about anything you want to do provided you want it badly enough.

4. HEAR WOLF "HOWL"--I MEAN SPEAK

4/16/09 Woodward, OK "Winning Management: Building a High Performance Workplace," Seminar, Melinda Brock, www.Wodwardhospital.com.

5/8/09 Grand Rapids, MI "Positive Attitude--The Key to Success in Nutrition and Dietetics", Opening Keynote, MDA, contact Susanne Consiglio, mda.execdir@sbcgloabal.net

NOTE: Let Dr. Rinke make your next meeting a "howling success." As a way of giving back, he speaks to ADA groups at significantly reduced rates.

5. HUMOR BREAK

Research has found that people who rise early have a more positive and cheerful disposition than those who sleep late.

That's why people sleep late--so they don't have to put up with all those cheerful positive people.
