4. HOW TO MAKE 2013 YOUR BEST YEAR EVER--PART I
By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RD, CSP

No matter what part of nutrition you’re in, it’s getting more competitive every day. Mastering the following eight strategies will help you thrive in tough times, and may even make 2013 your best year ever.

1. Get paid less
Yes, you read right! I said less! Why? Because if you get paid more than you are worth, you will be out of a job real soon! It’s elementary, Watson! In our capitalistic society you must generate more worth or value than you receive, otherwise the system will go kaput. Besides, “golden handcuffs” make you a slave. What you want to do is give your employer more than she expects. Start right now. In the long run, you will be compensated according to the value you deliver. I have designed an elegant lapel pin to remind myself of this concept at all times. The 111% pin comes with a card which reads:
Give 100% and you’ll survive.
Give 110% and you’ll thrive.
Give 111% and you’ll MAKE it a Winning Life!
Here is a little exercise that will keep you on track. Compute your weekly pay, add about a third for benefits, and divide by five. Put the value you just computed on a 3x5 card or a Post-it note and place it where it is clearly visible to you several times a day. At the end of each day, ask yourself: Did I generate $x of value today? If your typical answer is “yes” keep on--keeping on. If the answer is “no” more than 50 percent of the time, it’s time for you to figure out how you can add more value.

2. Value yourself
Who is your most important patient, client or customer? If you said me, you got the right answer. This is super important because I’ve found that most nutrition professionals are really great taking care of others however often forget #1. Want proof? Ask anyone in sales what it takes to be a sales superstar, and they will tell you that you’ve got to love what you sell. Notice I said love, not like! Even though you are probably not in sales, as an RD or DTR you sell yourself all the time! You sell yourself, your ideas, your proposals, your beliefs etc. to your patients, boss, spouse, children and even your pet. And for you to be able to do that successfully you’ve got to value, like and even love yourself, because if you don’t have it you can’t give it away! So start right now to love yourself the way you are, not the way you ought to be. (Read that again--it’s a biggie. It took me about 35 years to master!) That means that you have been able to turn off that internal negative voice that keeps focusing on all your weaknesses. And begin to recognize that of the more than 7 billion people on this earth there is not one perfect person! All of us are a composite of strength and weaknesses. And the trick is to value yourself for your strengths and forget your weaknesses. And if you can’t forget them, then team up with someone who compensates for your weaknesses.

3. Chase your passion
When your opportunity clock rings in the morning are you anxious to get up and go to work? (I believe that starting your day alarmed is counterproductive.) Are you excited to be in your profession? Do you love what you do? Does work seem like play to you? Do you actually look forward to work, at least four out of five days each week? If the answer is yes to all of these, count yourself fortunate because you are part of a very small minority. If your answer is no, it’s time to find and switch to your “dream job.” Don’t have the skills or the education to do what you love to do? Keep your current job, and make time to get what you need to be successful in your new profession. Watch less TV, go to fewer ball games, pay any price, and make any sacrifice, just do it! Then start working part time in your dream job. Can’t find someone to pay you for it? Volunteer. Once you are certain that you have found your passion, give up your day job. Not getting paid as much as in your former job? Not to worry. Just stay with it. I’ve learned after 40+ years of employment that overnight success takes a long time. But I’ve also learned that once you chase your passion, not your pay, you will have more fun and make more money, much more money than you have ever thought possible. Why? Because if it is fun, it gets done! Want proof? Look for the people who have made it to the top in their profession. I bet you that virtually all of them love what they do, have lots of fun and are compensated handsomely.

4. Identify and pursue your fire-in-the-belly goals
It’s been said that if you don’t know where you’re going, the last thing you want to do is get there any faster. And yet most people have absolutely no idea what they want to get out of life. Since this is a new year, write down your top three “fire-in-the-belly” life time goals. Prioritize these, and then put them on two 3x5 cards or Post-it notes. Put one on your desk or Day Timer, and the other on your bathroom mirror. Then get busy visualizing and internalizing these goals. (If they are running inside your head like a perpetual movie loop, you’ve got it). Follow that up with a detailed step by step action plan that will get you to where you want to go. Now, work that plan. (If you would like more help with this, read my popular “How to Maximize Professional Potential and Increase Your Earning Power in Nutrition and Dietetics” CPE program. It is approved for 30 CPEUs and Chapter 3 provides you with all the tools and forms you need to transform your dreams into reality--http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/C187CPEcourse.htm.

In the next issue of this eNewsletter I will share the other four strategies you need to master to help you make 2013 your best year ever.

6. HUMOR BREAK
A woman meant to call a record store, but dialed the wrong number and got a private home instead.
“Do you have ‘Eyes of Blue’ and ‘A Love Supreme?’” she asked.
“Well, no,” answered the puzzled homeowner. “But I have a wife and nine children.”
“Is that a record?” the caller inquired, puzzled in turn.
“I don’t think so,” replied the man, “but it’s as close as I want to get.”
