REALITY CHECK
===================================================
"The right people don't need to be managed. If you need to tightly manage someone, you've made a hiring mistake."
--Jim Collins

===================================================
1. NEWS YOU CAN USE
===================================================
THINGS ARE SELDOM AS BAD AS THEY APPEAR
If you are listening to the media, here is a common refrain: "Unemployment is like we've never seen before and no one is hiring." Really? The fact: The current unemployment rate of 7.6% has occurred nine previous times in the US since 1948 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 1982 it was at 10.8%. (That means that on average our current level of unemployment has occurred about every 6 years.) No one his hiring? The fact: Seventy-two of the 100 Best Companies to Work For (72%) are currently hiring, and each has at least 50 open positions.

ACTION STEPS
Don't let the media control how you feel. Cut what they tell you in about half and you may be somewhat close to reality. And if you are looking for a job, get yourself a copy of the Feb 2, 09 issue of Fortune magazine. It details which of the 100 Best Companies are currently hiring. The fact is that really smart companies are always looking for great talent.

3. HOW TO KEEP YOUR JOB DURING TOUGH TIMES-Part I
===================================================
Be visible
No one likes to fire people. So when it comes time for layoffs your boss will likely take the path of least resistance by selecting people "who are never around." So be visible which means that you show up early and leave late, attend critical meetings with important people, let the "powers-that-be" know what you are working on, and make every effort to get to know your boss really well including having lunch with her at least once a month. It also means that you avoid telecommuting even if it is offered to you, and if you are currently doing it, change it-because Woody Allen was correct: "80 percent of success is just showing up."

Don't be a "squeaky wheel"
Several of my clients are actually doing pretty well (believe it or not) and yet they are selectively laying people off. Why? Because the bad economy is a good excuse to get rid of people who are not contributing to the bottom line, who are "squeaky wheels", are high maintenance, exhibit persistent negative attitudes, are trouble makers, and/or whiners. (If you would like to manage your squeaky wheels more effectively read my "Don't Oil the Squeaky Wheel book, http://www.wolfrinke.com/squeakywheel.html.) Here is how one of my satisfied customers has put it to really good use:
Wolf:
I purchased your leadership book "Don't Oil the Squeaky Wheel…" for my husband Lonnie at the Conference in Des Moines. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the book. My husband is a sales manager for a soft drink company, and he has been dealing with a handful of squeaky wheels in his sales operation that bring negativity to the whole department on a daily basis. Instead of solutions to problems, the squeaky wheels only bring complaints. They are a drain on his positive attitude and also his time. He posted a sign on his door, "I don't oil squeaky wheels anymore, I replace them." Thanks for the great book.
Beth

Solve problems
In this bad economy, you can no longer expect to be compensated for time, only for results and problems solved. So actively look for a problem, focus on one that impacts negatively on the bottom line, put a team together and solve it. Then, let others know (especially the powers-that-be) what a great job you and your team did and how much your team improved the profitability of your organization. Yes, do give your credit away even in tough times, and at all costs don't brag-your boss will figure out that you are the leader of the team. BTW keeping your boss in the loop of your accomplishments is not bragging, it's a smart thing to do during tough times.

Do things your boss does not like to do
Lets face it we all have strengths and weaknesses. The things we really like to do (our strengths) always get done. The things that represent our weaknesses, somehow get pushed off to tomorrows "to-do list" or don't get done at all. To make yourself indispensable to your boss figure out what he does not like to do and do more of it. Consistently executing this strategy is the one of your best insurance policies against getting laid off, it may even get you promoted even during tough times.

Make your boss feel good
Believe it or not your boss, just like most people, likes to feel good. However the higher you are up the organizational ladder the more crap you catch. So make it a point to let your boss talk about herself-the more she does the more you can find out what is important to her, which makes it easy to exceed her expectation. (For the lighter side of this, check out the Humor Break in section # 5.) Also be sure catch your boss doing something right, or to find anything positive to say to your boss whenever you accidentally, on purpose, run into her. (Don't know what to do say-that just means that you don't know your boss well enough.) And while you are at it, be sure to do the same for your team members and colleagues. Find it difficult to catch others doing something right and making that work for you? Devour my Winning Management book or CD album, http://www.wolfrinke.com/WMprod.html.

Act as if you own the place
Any time you are confronted with a question, challenge or problem. For example you feel like going home early, buying a new piece of equipment, or hiring an assistant. Say to yourself: "Given the current economic climate, what would I do if this were my company?" Then act accordingly.

Go beyond the expected
People who deliver more than expected typically are the last to go. In other words:
Give 100% and you'll survive.
Give 110% and you'll thrive.
Give 111% and you will MAKE It a WINNING Life!!!"
(My perpetual desk calendar reminds you of this, as well as 364 other powerful messages that will help you succeed even in tough times, http://www.wolfrinke.com/calendar.html).

5. HUMOR BREAK
===================================================
An admin, sales rep, and a manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out and says, "I'll give each of you just one wish."

"Me first! Me first!" says the admin. "I want to be in the Hawaii without a care in the world". Puff! He's gone.

"Me next! Me next!" says the sales rep. "I want to be in Cancun, relaxing on the beach with the love of my life". Puff! She's gone.

"OK, you're up", the Genie says to the manager. "I want those two back in the office after lunch."

Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say, and if you want to keep your job, the last say as well.
