REALITY CHECK
Having a good time is the best motivator there is. When people feel
good about a company, they produce more.
--Dave Longaberger, CEO, The Longaberger Co.

WORK LESS--PRODUCE MORE
The US is the productivity champ if you look at GDP per employed person.
However, if you look at GDP per hour worked Norway ($36.40); dare I
even mention France ($35.37); Belgium ($35.01) and the Netherlands ($32.01)
have the US ($31.45) beat. Several of these countries have formalized
the three-day weekend.
ACTION STEPS:
It's a new year and a great time to reestablish balance in your life.
Cut the electronic umbilical cord, spend more time with the really important
people in your life--your family, get more exercise, and dedicate more
of your time to your hobby. Before you know it you'll be retired and
won't know what to do with the rest of your life.

YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL
Middle class British kid with dyslexia, nearly flunked out of one school
expelled from another, and dropped out all together at age 16 to start
his own magazine. (Still does not have a high-school diploma.) Has trouble
with authority, loves to have fun and do his own thing, has built one
of the best world known brands, never uses a computer (read that again),
and does not care about making money--money comes from serving customers
better than his competitors. On the personal side he considers his family--wife,
son and daughter--his number one priority. He spends two months with
them in the summer on his private island in the West Indies, winter
holidays at a South African game preserve, spring breaks in Majorca
and weekends in London. Plus he is into highly active sports in a big
way. Who is he? Sir Richard Branson, the CEO and founder of Virgin brands,
who manages--are you ready for this--224 companies all over the world--without
a computer. (Unbelievable!) Although not the richest man, his estimated
net worth of $2.6 billion is not too shabby for someone who dedicates
so much of his time to his family, sports and the pursuit of fun.
ACTION STEPS
Per Sir Richard:
1. Follow your passions.
2. Keep it simple.
3. Get the best people to help you.
4. Re-create yourself.
5. Play.

2. SIX STEPS FOR BUILDING TRUST--PART II
===================================================
In the last issue of this eNewsletter we discussed the first three steps
that will enable you to build trust:
Step 1: Hold everyone accountable.
Step 2: Establish boundaries.
Step 3: Build a learning organization.
Now here are the rest of the steps that will enable you to build trust:
Step 4: Practice tough love. Winning managers love people the way they
are, not the way they ought to be. And love is not possible without
trust. Hence, people who intentionally and repeatedly abuse trust must
be removed from the organization because you must be able to trust all
of your people all of the time. Otherwise you will revert back to functioning
like an autocratic executive--an executive who does the checking and
controlling in advance, as opposed to operating like a coach who lets
the organizational philosophy do the checking and controlling and only
deals with those team members who intentionally violate that gold standard.
Step 5: Walk your talk. I know you've heard this before, but this is
not about hearing or knowing, it's about doing, because trust will only
come alive as a result of reinforcing your words with your actions.
People are much more influenced by what you do than by what you say.
I have my seminar participants prove this to themselves by having everyone
stand and follow my directions. I tell them to extend their right arm,
form a circle with their index finger and thumb and place that circle
on their cheek. As I say "cheek" I put my thumb and index
finger circle on my chin. What happens next is quite comical. Most participants
look like they have an early onset of Alzheimer's disease because their
arm will tremble as they waver between cheek and chin. Others place
the circle on the chin and can't quite understand what the fuss is all
about. Typically only a few will follow my verbal instructions and place
the circle on their cheek. Next I have them look at each other, which
results in another salvo of snickers and laughter and then I have them
tell me what happened. Of course, they tell me that they were influenced
much more by my actions than my words. The same is true for your team
members! That's why you must practice what you teach.
Step 6. Practice high-touch. High-tech will increasingly be the norm
especially in virtual organizations. Without high touch, however, in
the form of meetings, organizational retreats and conferences, trust
will wither on the vine. There simply is no shortcut to developing trust
with another human being. It can't be done via the Internet, voice mail,
faxes, or other electronic media. It requires you to be belly-to-belly,
nose-to-nose, eye-to-eye with another human being, so that you can make
sure that a person's body language reinforces and supports his words.
So be sure to get out of your office and spend quality time with the
people who are responsible for 85 percent of your success-your team
members.

3. LACK OF TRUST AMONG YOUR TEAM MEMBERS?
===================================================
Contact me. In over 15 years of consulting I have developed a unique
and fail-safe process that in a day and a half will get your team back
in working order. Differences will have been worked out and the team
will walk away with written commitments that will serve as the foundation
for becoming a high-trust, cohesive, peak-performance team.

4. HUMOR BREAK
===================================================
Humorist Dave Berry's way of dealing with people who fall asleep in
meetings:
While the person is sleeping, ask everyone to quietly leave the room.
Then ask the same number of employees from another department to sit
in the room until the sleepy head wakes up. At that point have a spokes
person say to the sleeper: "Your plan is very, very risky, but
you presented it so well that we just have to give it a try. I just
hope for your sake that you know what you're getting yourself into."
At that point have the "leader" adjourn the meeting and everyone
leave the room without uttering another word.
