2. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE
Yoga may equal aerobic exercise for cardiovascular health
This systematic review of 1,404 records analyzed data from 37 randomized studies, involving 2,768 adults who either practiced yoga, exercised or did not exercise. People who practiced yoga demonstrated greater improvement in key cardiovascular risk factors than people who did not exercise. Improvements were noted in BMI, weight loss, lower LDL, higher HDL, lower blood pressure, and reduced heart rate. People who exercised achieved similar benefits to people who exercised. Researchers concluded: "There is promising evidence of yoga on improving cardio-metabolic health."

4. HOW TO THRIVE IN YOUR JOB--Part 1
By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RDN, CSP

Even though the economy is getting better, many employees are simply not "feeling" it, at least not in their pocket book. Here are seven strategies that will help you thrive in your current job.

Be visible
Promotions, pay increases and other "goodies" tend to go to people who are visible. They seldom go to people "who are never around." So be visible which means that you show up early and leave late, attend critical meetings with important people, let the "powers-that-be" know what you are working on, and make every effort to get to know your boss really well including having lunch with her at least once a month. It also means that you avoid telecommuting even if it is offered to you, and if you are currently doing it, change it--because Woody Allen was correct: "80 percent of success is just showing up."

Don't be a "squeaky wheel"
Several of my corporate clients are doing very well financially and yet they are selectively laying people off. Why? Because all organizations ultimately have to get rid of people who are not contributing to the bottom line, who are "squeaky wheels", high maintenance, have persistent negative attitudes, are trouble makers, and/or whiners. (If you want to manage your squeaky wheels more effectively read my "Don't Oil the Squeaky Wheel" CPE program (C169) available at http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cemgt.html#C169). It is approved for 20 CPEUs and may even help you and your spouse manage your people more effectively. Here is how one dietitian has put it to really good use:
Wolf:
I purchased your leadership book "Don't Oil the Squeaky Wheel..." for my husband Lonnie at the nutrition Conference in Des Moines. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the book. My husband is a sales manager for a soft drink company, and he has been dealing with a handful of squeaky wheels in his sales operation that bring negativity to the whole department on a daily basis. Instead of solutions to problems, the squeaky wheels only bring complaints. They are a drain on his positive attitude and also his time. He posted a sign on his door, "I don't oil squeaky wheels anymore, I replace them." Thanks for the great book.
Beth

Solve problems
Let's face it, you can no longer expect to be compensated for time, only for results and problems solved. So actively look for a problem, focus on one that impacts negatively on the bottom line, put a team together and solve it. Then, let others know (especially the powers-that-be) what a great job you and your team did and how much your team improved the profitability of your organization. Yes, always give your credit away, and whatever you do, don't brag--your boss will figure out that you are the leader of the team all on his own. BTW keeping your boss in the loop of your accomplishments is not bragging, it's a smart thing to do.

Do the things your boss does not like to do
We all have strengths and weaknesses. The things we really like to do (our strengths) always get done. The things that represent our weaknesses somehow get pushed off to tomorrow's "to-do list" or don't get done at all. To make yourself indispensable to your boss figure out what she does not like to do and do more of it. Consistently executing this strategy is a short cut to getting promoted or getting a pay increase.

Make your boss feel good
Your boss, just like most people, likes to feel good. However the higher you are up the organizational ladder the more "crap" you catch. So make it a point to let your boss talk about herself--the more she does the more you can find out what is important to her, which makes it easy to exceed her expectation. Also be sure to catch your boss doing something right, or to find something positive to say to your boss whenever you "accidentally" run into her. (Don't know what to say to her? That just means you don't know her well enough.) And while you're at it, be sure to do the same for your team members and colleagues. Find it difficult to catch others doing something right and making that work for you? Devour my Winning Management CPE program, C188, 28 CPEUs, http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cemgt.html#C188. If you prefer to learn in your car, this CPE course is also available in a 6CD album, C174, 10 CPEUs, http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cemgt.html#C174.

Act as if you own the place
Any time you are confronted with a question, challenge or problem--for example you feel like going home early, buying a new piece of equipment, or responding to a troublesome patient--say to yourself: "Given the current situation, what would I do if this were my company?" Then act accordingly.

Go beyond the expected
People who deliver more than expected typically are the last to be let go. In other words:
Give 100% and you'll survive.
Give 110% and you'll thrive.
Give 111% and you will MAKE It a WINNING Life!!!
(My perpetual desk calendar reminds you of this, as well as 364 other powerful messages that will help you succeed even in tough times, http://www.wolfrinke.com/calendar.html).

6. HUMOR BREAK
"I've got a great place to work!" shouted my 16-year-old daughter after coming home from her first day at her first job.
"I get two weeks' paid vacation. I can't wait to find out where they'll send me."
